The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series
The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
